The island of Güvercinada, one of the main attractions of Kuşadası, was filled with the sound of bird flocks,. That even became the reason why it got its name: «Güvercinada» means «Pigeon or Bird Island» in the Turkish language. However, this wonderful place washed by the waters of the Aegean Sea was not only inhabited by pigeons. At that time, many species of birds lived there and their singing, becoming more exotic and loud, was heard far beyond the island. Today, Pigeon Island is considered to be one of the most popular local attractions among travelers. You can get there by a narrow road leading from the city or take a pleasure boat, some of which are moored along the road and wait for curious travelers.
In the distant Middle Ages, however, the island was considered to be a serious strategic object, which protected the ancient city and small fishing villages from regular attacks of sea pirates. The Genoese built a majestic fortress on the island for the same purpose. Once did not cope with the onslaught of pirates, and became the residence of their leader, Khair ad-Din, the famous sea pirate. For many years the fortress remained a pirate's lair, where they kept stolen treasures and slaves. So the powerful stone citadel received the name «Pirate Castle», which is still relevant.
On the territory of the Pirate Castle, there are collections of a historical museum as well as a Turkish traditional restaurant with an amazing scenic view of Kuşadası and the snow-white yachts sailing by. What is more, there is a huge old dovecote in the center, so there are still bird voices on the island. Little rabbits running around everywhere can also be seen on the territory of the fortress. Diving enthusiasts will definitely enjoy a trip to the marvelous island. The play of agile tentacles of octopuses, swiftly swimming barracudas, colorful parrotfish and mysterious sea stars, and bizarre coral gardens - all that can be easily observed through the clear coastal water. This beauty will amaze even experienced divers.
