On the Mediterranean coast, near a town called Demre, lies a wonderful natural spot – picturesque Beymelek Lagoon. For a long time, its generous gifts, fish and crabs, have been used by local fishermen from a village of the same name. About 15 species of fish live in its waters. Here one can find barramundi and sargo, the restaurants’ favourite gilt-head bream and beautifully rare European bass, and several types of mullet including thicklip grey and feathered grey. Fishing in the lagoon is legal, both with a bait and hook and with a gill net.

The abundance of fish in the lagoon and lack of fishing restrictions couldn’t remain a privilege reserved for local fishermen, and aside from that, the beauty of the lagoon with azure waters and picturesque landscapes attracted adventurers and wild nature enthusiasts to the place. It didn’t take long for Beymelek Lagoon to become one of the main attractions of Demre along with ancient monuments, ruins of palaces and cathedrals.

Every year, tens of thousands of tourists come here. Some come expecting a big catch, bonfire fish soup or freshly grilled fish, others simply want to enjoy the beauty of the area, its magical sea landscapes and swimming in its warm waters. Its beaches aren’t modernly equipped, there are no fashionable hotels or restaurants. There are only peaked mountains covered in fresh greenery, azure waters and a light breeze coming from the sea, rushing over hot tan skin.

It feels like time has stopped there, the locals choose the old-fashioned way of life, sticking to ancient traditions. They cook sea gifts on fire and gladly welcome international tourists in cosy family cafes. And if travellers happen to miss the city bustle and noisy beaches, the centre of Demre is only a few minutes away, so one can enjoy busy streets and the comforts of civilisation in practically no time.
