Catholic Europe, Buddhist Asia and Protestant America... Although there are many religious movements that exist in countries of these continents, the above-mentioned religions are considered as the main ones. It is much more difficult to attribute any concrete religion to the people of South Korea. In ancient times, its residents practiced shamanism which gradually developed into Buddhism. For a long time, it coexisted with Confucianism that was popular during the period of the Three Kingdoms. Later, at the end of the 19th century and then in the 20th century, the spreading of Christianity started on the territory of South Korea. Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Protestantism and many movements of these religions took their worthy place, and Christian churches were erected in many cities.

One of the outstanding examples of sacred architecture of Korea is a church in the city of Suwon. Even if you are not fond of church architecture, you better do not ignore that majestic cultural monument.

The first Presbyterian church of Suwon is both a religious shrine for Christian believers and the main attraction of the city. The black gothic multi-story construction on the peak of the city hill is one of the most popular touristic places of Suwon. In 2012, a viewing platform was opened in its bell tower. The platform offers a fantastic view of the whole city and other popular attractions: huge defensive Hwaseong Fortress and the famous World Cup Stadium. The city looks especially beautiful during the night when thousands of lanterns get switched on and neon lasers of advertisement light up the night sky.

In 2013, exhibition halls of an art gallery were opened on the upper floors of the church, where you can get by a modern high-speed elevator. It comprises the works of the modern Korean artists and photographers. A colorful spiral staircase of the temple deserves special attention, as it is the only bright detail of the strict construction. Using the staircase you can go up to any floor of the church.
