Walk around Seoul in search of vivid impressions and unusual entertainments? Then walk on to Hongdae, a region known for its creative atmosphere and underground culture. Live performances of street musicians and dancers, unique cafes and restaurants, trendy shops and boutiques, cozy galleries and art markets, night clubs and fun karaoke… The busy streets of Hongdae never sleep, and they are always ready to offer different leisure options to local people and travelers. These options would appeal to techno-savvy youth, families with kids, and curious pensioners.
Hongdae is located near the main campus of Hongik University. The institution has always been famous for its programs for art critics and other creative disciplines. Young students, in their turn, have permanently tried to bring something unique and useful to the world. Hongdae grew under the supervision of brave and enterprising young people who 30 years ago started to combine studies and work in the fashion ateliers and workshops they created next to the campus. The inspiring vibe benefited both the university and the new district. The creative youth fell in love with Hongdae, and other citizens of Seoul appreciated its pleasant vibe over time. Although not a trace left of the earlier ateliers and workshops, the neighborhood managed to preserve its identity and soleness.
Walking around Hongdae can be compared to visiting a contemporary open-air exhibition space. All the young talents of Seoul, passionate about their art and willing to share it with others, gather here. Dancers, musicians and actors chose Hongdae Walking Street as their stage. Artists use walls of the buildings on Hongdae Mural Street instead of canvas. Besides, craftsmen and needlewomen organized an art and handicraft fair in the park near the university, a favorite place of young families with little kids.
