Myeongdong is among the main tourist districts in Seoul. This popular center of shopping and cultural life attracts locals and tourists with its luxurious shops and a variety of landmarks. Every day more than two million people visit the busy streets of Myeongdong where there is always plenty of things to do day and night.

During the reign of the Joseon dynasty, Myeongdong was an analog of a modern commuter town. But everything changed in the middle of the last century: after the Korean War, it became a commercial area. Today, Myeongdong is replete with up-to-date skyscrapers, malls, fashion boutiques, posh restaurants and unique cultural sites.

One of the most visited landmarks of the district is the local market where huge indoor shops stand side by side with numerous open-air shopping arcades. Here you can buy different goods. But more often citizens and travelers buy branded clothes, footwear and accessories. Shopaholics prefer Lotte Young Plaza, Lotte, M Plaza, Noon Square и Shinsegae centers.

The main architectural attraction is Myeongdong Cathedral or the Cathedral Church of Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception. It is a catholic temple in a neo-Gothic style built in 1898. Unlike European cathedrals, it cannot boast a rich decoration: the only adornments are high stained-glass windows with colored paintings. But even such a modest church the Roman Catholic diocese is a rarety in South Korea. Not only do numerous guides and city excursions attract tourists here but also Sunday morning services, held specifically for them. Cultural enthusiasts are welcome at the Myeongdong Art Theatre or the Nanta Theatre. The Myeongdong Theatre is located on the site of the former National Theatre of Korea. It invites visitors to enjoy experimental performances, dance and music concerts, art festivals and other events. The Nanta Theatre occupies the third floor of the Myeongdong Art Centre, a UNESCO heritage site. Here you can watch comedy plays without words, understandable to any viewer.
