We can learn about history and culture of other countries and continents from books and stories of experienced tour guides. We can visit historical architectural monuments or take a look at the artifacts in the museums and galleries. Another alternative is going to thematic parks and villages and get acquainted with traditions of this or that people, get immersed in their everyday life or celebrate some important events together with them. In the vicinity of the South Korean capital, you can visit a real traditional Korean village that is more than 600 years old.
Bukchon Hanok Village is surrounded by historical palaces and ancient Buddhist temples. It was open to the public in 1973. Since then everyone has got the possibility to see hundreds of traditional hanoks which were built during the reign of the great Joseon dynasty. There you have the opportunity to get familiarized with the rich culture of the Korean people. In fact, the village is a giant open-air museum with around 900 old houses that belong to different provinces of the state. Among them are cultural centers, craft workshops, hotels, restaurants and tea houses which are especially popular among tourists.
There you can witness the traditional way of life of the inhabitants, watch a performance dedicated to a wedding or a funeral, go to a concert of Korean folk music or take part in national group dances which are organized on the main square of the village. You can also go to the old craft workshops and feel like a real blacksmith, potter or carpenter. Or take a colorful kite and become a participant in some popular competitions in South Korea. Moreover, there are several museums on the territory of the village: Knot Museum, the Museum of Embroidery and Bukchon Asian Art Museum.
Another special feature of Bukchon Hanok Village is that it is a real residential area where inhabitants decided to lead a traditional way of life. There you can even see women wearing traditional Korean clothes – hanboks.
