It was in 1959 when the modern South Korean city of Daejeon became a subject of talks. That year the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute was opened. In 2011 several research laboratories formed the Institute of Fundamental Studies. As a result, the city got the status of the South Korean scientific and technical capital. So, nothing is surprising in the fact that one of the main attractions of the city and also one of the most popular museums of the country is the National Science Museum.
The history of this famous Korean museum started in Seoul in 1949. At that time it was called the Seoul National Science Museum. During the Korean War in the early 1950s, the capital building of the museum was demolished almost to its foundation. For ten years after 1962, the local authorities were busy with its restoration. Later, in 1990, a part of its exhibits became a basis of the collection of the new National Science Museum which was opened in the city of Daejeon.
The modern museum was settled in a spacious two-story building. Currently, it is administrated by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology of South Korea. The first floor has seven thematic exhibition halls which are devoted to mathematics and astronomy. There you can watch different experiments and enjoy a scientific film at the 4D cinema. On the second floor, there are 5 thematic zones devoted to the universe, wild nature, the birth of life on Earth and all stages of human evolution. There you will find a big planetarium and the place where scientific seminars are often held. The visitors can not only watch the interesting experiments but also take part in them in all the halls on the second floor of the museum. The most popular exhibit of the museum is a musical dancing robot that welcomes the visitors near the information desk on the first floor.
