Even though Bucheon city is not very big, there are many historical and cultural monuments on its territory. For example, the amazing European Porcelain Museum. However, these attractions did not bring fame to the cultural capital of South Korea. The real treasure of Bucheon is one of the country's most famous acrobatic theaters Tong Chang, one of the country's most famous orchestra,s and also numerous festivals which are organized throughout the year. There are spring and flowers festivals which are dedicated to blooms of azaleas, cherry trees and peach trees, summer comics fair, which brings together all the comics artists of the world, etc. However, the most popular festival is the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFan).
BIFan was first organized in 1997 in Bucheon. From that time on it has been one of the main summer attractions in Korea. Moreover, it is the biggest festival of that kind in Asia. It is closely connected with the Japanese and European International Fantastic Film Festivals.
Every year during the hottest months the streets of Bucheon are filled with Korean and international film stars, film directors and those who are fond of fantastic films. They come there to enjoy the program and the atmosphere of a celebration and get energized by the whole process.
The standard program of BIFan includes the Puchon Choice part which is devoted to the full-length and short feature films, the World Fantastic Cinema part – the newest films, the Forbidden Zone part – the most creepy horror movies, and the Ani Fanta part – fantastic anime. Besides, there is a special creative genre program Vision Express and the program of recognized masters of the film industry called The Masters.
During the week participants of the festival attend screenings of the films by nominees and laureates. At the end of the luxurious cultural event, everyone can attend a colorful closing ceremony with fantastic fireworks is organized.
