The main architectural attraction of the city of Alor Setar is the old fort of Kuala Kedah, built at the beginning of the 17th century. At that time, the Portuguese ruled the peninsula, and they needed defensive structures to protect their colonized territories.
Previously, there was a small fortification that was destroyed by the Portuguese during a siege in 1611. Later, they decided to build a new fortress, more reliable, larger and planned according to the latest architectural and military innovations. Surprisingly, when the Portuguese were building their fort, they used not only stones and other makeshift materials but also bamboo: they discovered the amazing properties of this herb, several times stronger than iron, right here, on this peninsula.
Since the location of the fort turned out to be as convenient as possible (its towers provided good visibility of the sea and part of the city, the high walls and rather narrow coastal strip made it almost impregnable), it was constantly being enlarged, renovated and restored. The last serious construction work was carried out in the fort of Kuala Kedah in 1771: then its walls were faced with solid bricks and the foundation was significantly strengthened. Besides, many cannons bought in India and Great Britain were brought here in 1780: it was the most formidable weapon of that time.
Even though the fort was often besieged, destroyed and rebuilt, it has survived to this day in almost perfect condition thanks to the favorable location and constant care of this strategically important place.
Today, the fort is a museum, both architectural and historical. Come here to wander through the back streets of the fort, enter the ancient halls, climb high walls, and see a small but rather curious museum exhibition dedicated to the history of the fort and the city.
