According to local legend, one of the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, who pursued the prophet Moses, decided to hide his treasures in the highest burial urn on earth. So he created a real temple, artfully carved into the rock with the help of ancient Egyptian magic. The mysterious stone temple was named Al-Khazneh – «The Treasury» in Arabic. It was located on the territory of the modern Kingdom of Jordan in a place called Ma'an. Since then, the mysterious shrine has been repeatedly raided by the Bedouins who wanted to embezzle the coveted treasures. This fact is confirmed by the numerous traces of their shots and the locals’ stories passed down through generations.

But there is another, more official version of how this ancient unique architectural monument appeared. Historians say that the fantastic temple, which is more than 40 meters high, was carved into the rock by a man, Aretas IV Philopatris – the King of the Nabataean Kingdom in the first century AD. It was supposed to be his tomb, and in one of the chambers could house a sarcophagus. However, archaeologists discovered here only a few modest tombs in 2003, and after that, the excavations were suspended.

The purpose of Al-Khazneh is also noticeable by ancient sculptures: two huge eagles carry the souls of the dead to the afterlife, and two statues of the brothers Castor and Pollux faithfully guard the main entrance. The six Corinthian columns of the famous Al-Khazneh are considered the main tourist attraction of these places. Thousands of people come here every year. The famous American artist Frederick Edwin Church even painted these columns, preserving them forever. This was at the end of the 19th century, but even today, the amazing view of the sacred monastery does not leave anyone indifferent and the method of its construction remains a big mystery.
