The Suramadu National Bridge is obviously ideal for urbanism followers. It connects the cities of Surabaya and Bangkalan. The bridge has the status of a national object – it also connects two Indonesian islands: Java and Madura. The length of 5438 meters makes the bridge the longest in the country. Its width is 30 meters. The structure was opened for traffic in June 2009.
The construction of the modern bridge was planned to develop and support the economy of Madura Island, which is at a rather low level comparing to other districts of East Java. After the bridge became functioning, the load on the ferry crossing and ships plying between the islands noticeably declined.
Suramadu consists of three parts: the dam, the access bridge, and the main bridge. The dam was specially erected to connect the construction from both sides on the road through the shallow waters. The main bridge has three parts: two side spans about 192 meters long and the central span 434 meters long.
The key part is supported by the rope structure 140 meters long through the twin towers. The main «deck» has a composite structure of 2.4 meters thick. Cruise ships crossing the Madura Strait can safely pass under the bridge: the free space «under the belly» is about 35 meters above the water level.
Two-way traffic along the bridge uses eight lanes. Besides, there are two special ways for two-wheeled vehicles that can also serve for emergency purposes. But racing is forbidden here: the limit is 25 km/h. Don’t forget about it going along the bridge on wheels: platforms over the bridge have videocams recording the movement.
The construction of the bridge allowed Java citizens and tourists to get to Madura and back faster.
