Rumah Radakng means «long house» in Indonesian. Today, this traditional building of the Dayak tribe is a monument and a popular tourist attraction in Pontianak, West Kalimantan.
The house got this name for a reason – its length is 138 meters and the height is 7 meters.
It is not difficult to find the house – it is located in the complex of the cultural village on Sutan Syahrir Street. This building attracts not less than an actively visited city monument «Equator».
The house's capacity is impressive: the main room can accommodate 600 people at once! Such a scale allows to successfully use the building for events, celebrations, and festivals.
The main staircase is guarded by sculptures of the island’s hornbill. Six imposing pillars with bird sculptures greet entering people on both sides of the stairs. The decor is minimalist but full of local symbols, ethnic carvings of the Dayaks.
The Dayak are the aborigines of Kalimantan and the most numerous people on the island. Historically, people lived here in similar houses where the household was managed according to the commune rules. Houses could be 100 or 200 meters high, uniting up to 50 families under one roof. Houses were often built on massive wooden posts by the river. The elevated position protected from enemies and wild animals.
However, the enormous house in Pontianak is not historical. The house was opened by the governor of West Kalimantan in 2013. Today, the unusual construction is used for cultural events that attract both local citizens and numerous guests.
Tourists can take away small copies of the long house as souvenirs. In the souvenir shop right there, they can buy things for home interior, fabric bags, gastronomic gifts from West Kalimantan.
The house is open for free visiting from 07:00 to 18:00 every day.
