Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park with an area of 500 sq. km. was established in the vicinity of the city of Malang on Java Island in 1982. Since then thousands of ecotourism supporters visit the park every year. Although the views here are truly fascinating and unique, and the air is clean and fresh, brave travelers are mostly attracted to these beautiful lands by magnificent volcanoes. There are five formidable peaks which are based on an enormous ancient volcano called Tengger. The most popular among the young volcanoes are the Smoking Bromo with a crater of 800 meters and the highest peak of the island – Semeru. For 20 years Bromo has been active. Since 2010, it has erupted several times, as evidenced by numerous trails and roads covered with a thick layer of black volcanic ash. Since 1967, Semeru has been considered the main attraction of the park due to its light eruptions in the form of white smoke every 30 minutes. In total, the volcano made local people nervous more than 50 times during the last 200 years.

Besides spectacular and unpredictable volcanoes, this park has many beautiful sites. There are about 50 rivers, several amazing waterfalls and lakes, and also plenty of caves. Locals consider them sacred and erect their shrines nearby. The Tenggerese live here. They call themselves the heirs of the Majapahit Empire and have the same lifestyle as in the 13th-16th centuries.

Despite the dense greenery at the foot of the volcanoes, the flora world of the national park is not too diverse. The only pride is more than 200 species of orchids growing on the slopes at low altitudes. Here you can meet deer and wolves, pangolins and gorgeous green peacocks, and also the most dangerous predators of the island – the Javanese leopard and the wild marble cat.
