«An idyllic hill for walks and picnics» – that’s how an online map of the city of Ranchi defines the spot. Calming promenades with splendid views: that is the major reason the locals come here. The guests are mostly attracted by the name this hill on the north-east of the city bears. It is named after the first Asian Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The Tagore Hill is 92 meters high. Today it stands to remind the legacy of the author, artist, composer, and philanthropist.

To delight in the views opening from the top of the hill is one of the most desired «missions» among the visitors of Ranchi. But before the Tagore Hill became a popular place to embrace the sunbeams, it was a spiritual resource, a personal place of power for the elder brother of the writer. Jyotirindranath Tagore attended the place in 1908 and was so captivated by the beauty of the hill and its vicinities, that built an ashram here. The Ramkrishna Mission Ashram still stands at the bottom of the Tagore Hill.

The geographical peculiarity of the city has long been a source of inspiration. Its natural rocky slopes attract mountain climbers, and for ordinary walks, there are stone staircases. The greenery surrounding the hill and the paths to its top adds to the charm of this location for meditation and recreation. Don’t forget to take some water and snacks with you. To have some refreshment on top of the hill while enjoying the cityscape dressed in soft sunset colors is a deal a traveler has to consent to.

Having comfortable shoes is essential: although the hill is equipped with solid rock steps and the observation deck is secured by a parapet, the hike to the top is partly a sporting activity.

The Tagore Hill is located in the Morhabadi district, 7 kilometers from the railway station and 10 kilometers from the airport. A taxi or an auto-rickshaw can drive you to the hill from any part of the city.
