There are several traditional markets in Lucknow. Indian city shopping is an exciting activity in itself. But sometimes you want something more European in terms of habitualness and «systematicity». Then your destination is Hazratganj, the core district of Lucknow. Today it’s not only a popular spot but one of the main sights of the city.

British colonial architecture and latest brands, traditional Indian restaurants and theatrical settings nearby, tea shops and cinemas: the Hazratganj Market is something bigger and greater than a simple municipal historical bazaar in the heart of Lucknow.

Besides strips with stalls, there are modern shops, hotels, a few cultural establishments including theaters and office centers. But in the spotlight – shopping! One single district has it all: from name brands to things by local producers. And, of course, this historical commercial district offers multiple restaurants with diverse cuisine and street food spots in addition to your shopping trophies.

The history of the Ganj market dates back to 1827 when goods from Asia and Europe started to be sold here. Fifteen years later, the name of the district was changed to Hazratganj in honor of King Amjad Ali Shah, famous under the nickname «Hazrat».

After the first Independence War in 1857, the British invaded Lucknow, and the city adapted to the British style. The Hazratganj district became a local replica of Queen Street in London. It was a city within a city, brought into being for the British. In the 30s of the 20th century, the historical market building acquired a stylized Gothic look.

In 2010, almost 200 years later, the Hazratganj district was redesigned. The buildings got uniformly painted, and flag-stone pavement and Victorian style balustrades were introduced.

Nearby the market district, there is a metro station under the same name, Hazratganj.
