Chandigarh is a unique city. It appeared not so long ago, in the second half of the 20th century. In five years, from 1951 to 1956, renowned architect Le Corbusier designed and built a city which is considered the most comfortable in India. Although more than a million people live here, there is no feeling of overpopulation, and everyone gets enough space. Moreover, Chandigarh is one of the greenest cities in the country: there is enough space designated for parks, garden squares, and alleys.
Le Corbusier, who can be considered the father of the city, designed and created everything: the plan of the streets, arrangement of houses and parks, road traffic direction, building dimensions, and space planning inside them. Not a single nuance was overlooked by the genius.
It is not surprising, that in the city, there is a museum devoted to this world-famous person.
The Le Corbusier Centre is located in the old architecture office where the master lived and created while he was building the city. They tried to keep the authentic setting and atmosphere that reigned here while he came up with new ideas and went on to their realization.
Today, people come here to learn how the master worked, and see his drawings and paintings, scale models of future houses and state buildings. And of course, to study the sketches of the most famous monument «the Open Hand», the symbol of Chandigarh.
Frequently, the museum host open lectures not only about the life and work of the founding father of the city but about modern questions of city-building as well. Young architects come here to study Le Corbusier’s archive and enrich their knowledge.
Chandigarh is a unique project. It is an experiment that was completed with success. That is why it is so important to keep and study the legacy of the great architect which can become a good aid to all contemporary urbanists. Because the city he created more than half a century ago proves the point that it was created for the people, for their comfortable and cozy life.
