The Old Town of Nanshi is the cradle of Shanghai. It was the starting point of the ancient Chinese town which is now the biggest financial center of the country and an important player on the international economical scene.
The boundaries of the Old Town stretches from the street of Renmin to the street of Zhonghua. Several centuries ago it was surrounded by a strong wall and a moat as a defense from sea pirates and other dangerous invaders. After the loss during the Opium War lots of foreigners fled to Shanghai. They built their concessions around the historical district. The city started to grow dynamically, but Nanshi remained an island of the traditional Chinese culture.
The Old Town still attracts travelers who come there hoping to solve the mysteries of the East. Although the district is one of the main attractions of Shanghai, it is gradually becoming a leading trade block of the city. On the one hand, it is full of street cafés with traditional Chinese food. On the other hand, there are lots of gift and handicraft shops as well as interesting antique shops, busy markets, and fairs. Tourists get a light euphoria when they feel the smells and see a variety of goods in the local shops!
Nanshi is the heart of Shanghai. It is difficult to imagine the city without it. It has many interesting touristic attractions.
Take a rest and try to fully relax in the splendid garden of Yuyuan and the Taoist City God Temple which is located near it. They are considered to be the two most picturesque places of the Old Town. If after a walk along the old streets of Nanshi you will want to continue the leisure in union with nature, go to a small but very nice park of Gucheng which is located not far from the town. This is the favorite place of locals. As not many tourists come there, nothing will bother you. So you will be able to relax and get the healing energy.
