The city of Changsha in China is more than three thousand years old. During this time, everything that could have happened in the Chinese city happened. The history of this place is so rich and diverse that its echoes are everywhere. Temples, ancient buildings, and what the city has come to in so many years – modern skyscrapers and progress in all areas of life. It is no wonder that the ghosts of the past are constantly showing up, you get used to it. But in Changsha, you constantly feel someone's gaze on you, as if someone big was watching you without blinking or turning away. To find out who this «Big Brother» is, you have to go to Orange Isle near Changsha.
Here, everything becomes clear at once. One glance is enough to understand who owns this staring, tense gaze. There is a park on the island and a statue of young Mao Zedong, a famous Chinese politician, at the far end of the park.
The 32-year-old Communist leader of the Celestial Empire is staring at you without looking away. His face is tense and his eyes clearly show determination, ambition, and an overwhelming desire to defend his ideas. Contrasting with the look on his face, Mao's hair carelessly blows in the wind. Even though the ruler himself has been gone for years, his greatness and strength of mind still can be felt.
The statue was opened in 2009 to celebrate Mao's 116th birthday. The construction of the monument cost the Changsha government a tidy sum of $35 million. The statue of Mao Zedong is made of red granite. More than 8000 blocks were used, for a total of two thousand tons.
The statue, of course, is the main attraction in the park. As soon as you see the monument of the leader, you rush to get close to it. The place for the construction, by the way, was not chosen by chance. Mao loved this island very much and spent a lot of time here.
