Bholaganj quarry
Sylhet and surrounding
Rivers, Lakes
Rivers, Lakes

Bholaganj is the place where the river merges with the sky. It is the largest stone quarry in Bangladesh.

You get in a long wooden boat and sail forward, where the sky begins. After a while, you start to see the outlines of the grey mountains. They fit perfectly into the landscape. And around them, there are endless forests. Bholaganj is one of the most beautiful places in the country.

It is a half natural, half artificial attraction just 33 kilometers from the town of Sylhet. However, you have to drive on a dirt road, so it is a long way to go. Once you have arrived and shaken off the road dust, you can begin your journey through the quarry. When you get out of the car and go to the boat, you have absolutely white pebbles under your feet. Locals even nicknamed Bholaganj the «white stone». The beach is white due to limestone mining.

Part of the beach is covered with white pebbles, the other – with small warm sand. And the water is surprisingly clear and cool because it is nourished by numerous streams and waterfalls flowing down from green hills. The quarry is on the border with India, and the mountains are already on its territory. There is no way to get close to them. Although there is a small shed near the borderline. Locals say it is a customs office.

The atmosphere in the Bholaganj quarry is very calm. Picturesque nature, birds singing and the murmuring of water hypnotize, bring you into a meditative state, filling with energy. Tourists and locals who do not admire the beauty from the boat and do not swim, walk barefoot on the beach in search of the white stone itself.

The first mention of this magical land appeared somewhere in the 18th century – in the records of an income collector named Robert Lindsay, who lived in Sylhet. At that time, the British came to Bangladesh and began mining limestone, which was used to produce cement.
