Tajhat Palace
Rangpur and surrounding
Castles, Fortresses, Towers
Castles, Fortresses, Towers

Different stories, legends, and fairytales add their own charm and attractiveness to this place. For instance, Rangpur citizens believe that there is a treasure hidden in the walls of the Tajhat Palace.

When you look at the ancient but still beautiful facade of the palace, you start to believe those rumors, and your curiosity force you to get inside and start looking for treasure. But the real treasure is the palace itself. It was constructed in northern Bangladesh in the 19th century by a Hindu merchant from Punjab. To create a white palace with marble staircases, the merchant spent $1.5 million and employed 2,000 people.

It is better to start your tour with a walk in the garden. Trimmed shrubs, hedges, fruit trees, stone paths, and fountains without water... It's not like you're in tropical Asia. It is more like a walk in an abandoned park somewhere in France. It’s a very atmospheric place.

After you enjoyed the mystery of this place, come closer. The main building of the palace is crowned with a beautiful dome. Look at the white facade. There are a few elements missing. The balustrade used to have Roman sculptures, but time leaves marks.

After the merchant’s death, the Supreme Court of Rangpur moved into the palace. However, it did not stay here for a long time to define humans' destinies. At the end of the 20th century, the palace was empty until a museum was built. The former owner’s personal stuff was moved to the upper floors, and transparent display cases with ancient artifacts were installed in the spacious rooms of the hall. There are some interesting examples of terracotta art from the 10-11th centuries, several examples of Hindu stone carving, objects dedicated to gods, ancient manuscripts in Sanskrit and Arabic, including the Ramayana and the Koran.

It’s probably all the treasures you can find in the museum, but in fact, they mean a lot. Although not all the rooms are shown during the tour.
