Unfortunately, we always witness the destruction or dilapidation of the buildings of antiquity. So we have to try to figure out what the building actually looked like, what was there, and what it was built for. Nonetheless, it should be admitted that finishing ancient buildings with the usage of imagination is a special kind of pleasure for the traveler.
To practice your imagination once again you can visit the ruins of Hajiganj Fort in Narayanganj. Hajiganj Fort is an interesting architectural construction. The first thing you are supposed to see is a gate including a small arch, with a stone wall on either side with small square holes in tiny cabins. These cabins symbolize lotus petals. Initially, they were meant for the muskets and protection from shelling. Behind the «petals», there is a path. This path leads around the entire hexagonal perimeter of the fort.
Flower lovers will appreciate rounded bastions as they are made in the form of lotus flowers. In ancient times, guns were located there. The sole main entrance is also decorated with a lotus. Coming out of the main gate, the inhabitants of the fort got to the river. Hajiganj is a water defensive object. The only way to get there was by ship. The river remained, but receded a little. Over these centuries, the view of the river has hardly changed. Stop for a moment and enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of water.
The fort stands on the Shitalakshya River. It was an important transport artery that played a significant role in the transportation of goods and weapons. Hajiganj Fort is the only remaining fort of several defensive posts built in those days.
The fort seems to be completely empty inside, but in fact, there was an observation tower in the center of the fort 300 or 400 years ago. Time was merciless to it. Now there are only a few stones left. You might be wondering where the fort's defenders lived? Bangladesh was a hot country, so the only thing that soldiers needed was protection from the rain. Presumably, they used tents.
