When most people hear the word «castle», they think of a luxurious building with an abundance of decor, columns, and elegant turrets. But in the district of Mymensingh, there is a totally different kind of castle. Alexander Castle is a large house built in the Colonial style. The entire estate covers an area of more than 11 hectares. Earlier it was one of the most beautiful buildings of the city, which was used as a holiday home for famous guests and rulers of the region.

Alexander Castle was built in 1879 by the order of the Indian Prince Maharaj. And the luxury house got its name in honor of the first magistrate of Mymensingh.

Its architectural design was innovative and turned out to be expensive: such a house cost more than 45,000 Taka. It was designed in the popular at that time Colonial style. But the materials used for the construction were quite unusual: only metal and wood. This entire castle stands on a high pedestal. This decision was justified by the need to protect the building from inundation, which periodically occurred in this area due to flooding of the nearby river.

The two-story house had 14 rooms. They were furnished with expensive royal furniture, and the decor was full of elegant silver statuettes and luxurious dishes.

A beautiful garden was laid out on the territory of the estate. The owners also created a large artificial pond, which has been preserved to this day. According to the stories of elderly residents, house owners used to keep wild animals here: tigers, cougars, and lynxes. Huge aviaries decorated with flowers were set up especially for them.

Next to the entrance, the owner of Alexander Castle who was a lover of classical art, installed two beautiful statues in the antique style. Although they were significantly damaged by time, they still survived to this day.

Unfortunately, today the state of Alexander Castle is not as luxurious as it was before. But still, it is considered to be one of the most beautiful houses in Mymensingh.

Now there is the library of the Men's Pedagogical College. However, it does not occupy all the rooms of the castle. Some of them house an unusual museum where you can learn the history of Alexander Castle.
