The Shait Gambuj Mosque (or the Sixty Dome Mosque) is the largest mosque in Bangladesh, built during the Sultanate period in the 12-16th centuries. It is unique in its size, unusual architecture, and an incredibly large number of domes that cover the entire roof of the building.
The construction of the Sixty Dome Mosque began in 1442. It was supposed to be the biggest and most beautiful mosque in Khalifatabad (known now as the town of Bagerhat) with a room for prayer, madrasa, and a beautiful ballroom where it would be possible to carry out a variety of balls.
As a result, the largest and, at that time, the most beautiful Shait Gambuj Mosque appeared in the city in 1459.
The roof of this massive building, which is almost 50 meters long, is decorated with 77 domes. There is also one small dome in each corner of the new mosque. Inside, there is a huge prayer hall divided into niches by stone and wooden columns. They make it possible to separate the male part of the mosque from the female, and they also limit the place of madrasas where children and adults learn a new religion.
The Sixty Dome Mosque is very impressive from the outside. But inside, the decoration isn't as majestic. There is no decoration, the abundance of columns create the feeling of a small space. But there is also a small secret: during the morning prayer, the sun penetrates the small windows of the mosque and fills the entire interior space with light – this creates the effect of bizarre games of light and shadow. That's when the mosque seems to change its appearance, turning from a dark room into a hall filled with warm sunlight.
But why is Shait Gambuj Mosque called the Sixty Dome Mosque, if there are 81 domes in total? If you carefully study the architectural features of this building, you can see that there are 60 columns inside, which support the massive roof. And, most likely, the mosque used to be called the sixty-column mosque. But, due to the transformation of the word in languages, it got its current name – the Sixty Dome Mosque. Locals got used to and started to pass it on from one generation to another.
