Not far from Khulna, there is a unique place – the Mosque City of Bagerhat. It was believed that this wonderful architectural complex was lost for many years. But just at the beginning of the 20th century, it was found by historians and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is said that the city was founded by the Turkic commander Ulugh Khan Jahan, who died around 1459. It is still unknown when the first stone of the beautiful Mosque City of Bagerhat was laid.

This unusual architectural complex covers an area of more than 50 square kilometers. The large area contains the picturesque ruins of the once great and vibrant city of Bagerhat. Now there are about 360 buildings: mosques, palaces, mausoleums, and, of course, residential and public facilities. Huge water reservoirs were built to serve the population of the ancient city, and parts of the settlement were connected by a network of paved roads and bridges.

Today, the greatness of the Mosque City of Bagerhat can be estimated by its buildings, which are made in a special architectural style called Khan Jahan. Surprisingly, this style can no longer be found in any of the cities of Bangladesh. A unique phenomenon – the city that has no analogs.

Walking through the territory of the ancient city, you should pay attention to the ruins of the Khan Jahan Mausoleum. Not only the mausoleum itself has been preserved here, but also a large Palace Hall for meetings. Next to it, on an artificial hill, there is the tomb of Khan Jahan, surrounded by a high wall.

After viewing all the picturesque ruins, you can go to the museum, which is also located on the territory of this historical complex. The museum is not very big, but really interesting. Here you can learn about the main artifacts found on the territory of the Mosque City of Bagerhat. As a rule, these are household items dating back to the 15th century, parts of preserved stone carvings that decorated the interiors of mosques, tools, and weapons used by locals. A visit to the museum will not take much time, but it will bring you a lot of positive emotions, as it is a real treasure trove of ancient artifacts.
