Jagannath Temple located in Comilla is one of the oldest in Bangladesh. It was built in about the 16th century, as the main temple of the Hindu god Jagannath, who was revered by locals.

The history of its origin is also interesting. According to legend, one of the richest people of a neighboring city had a vision that he should build a temple. And this vision clearly indicated not only the place but also the architectural design of the future structure. He quickly drew a picture that was given to him from above and went in search of a place for a new temple. He was searching for a long time because the place had to be flat and suitable for a tall building.

The ideal location was the village of Tipperary (that was the name of Comilla then). He began to search for craftsmen who could build a temple that had no analogs in this area and looked exactly like the temple from the man’s thoughts.

Unfortunately, the name of the author of this architectural masterpiece is unknown. But now we can see the creation, that immortalized the brilliant master for many years.

The unique feature of Comilla Jagannath Temple is that it is the only octagonal temple in Bangladesh, and there are no other such temples in the whole country.

Besides, it was beautifully decorated with terracotta plates with the finest floral ornament. It is also a rarity in Bangladesh.

According to ancient documents, there used to be a large sculpture of Jagannatha in the temple. Every holiday it was taken out of the halls and installed in the center of the village, so that everyone could come and worship the deity.

And there is also a legend that many centuries ago this temple had not only a ground but also an underground part, two floors deep. The underground part contained countless treasures that were later destroyed by the gods to prevent any wars over them.
