Shrine of Bayazid Bostami
Chittagong and surrounding
Temples, Churches
Temples, Churches

The city of Chittagong is home to a temple-tomb of the revered saint, the famous Persian Sufi Bayazid Bostami. Even though there are a temple and a grave, the saint never was there. Bayazid Bostami was born in 804 in Iran and presumably died there. He never visited Chittagong. But this did not stop locals from erecting a tomb and a mosque that will definitely impress you.

The structure is very strange and contradictory. The temple is a Bostami tomb, which is hidden under the concrete walls of a modern building. A little further away, there is a mosque with three green domes and colorful minarets. Around the complex, there are several more one-story buildings of white and blue color. The main entrance is nicely decorated. It is shrouded in pink, purple flowers with bright green leaves. After bounding kerchiefs on your head and your belt, taking off your shoes, go to the territory of the temple complex.

The Complex of the Shrine of Bayazid Bostami differs from all similar buildings. It seems that the architect was very fond of sweets. The mosque looks a bit like a cake. Three green domes topped with oblong crowns with floral ornaments. There are also bright red, green, and blue flowers at the base of the dome. The mosque has six minarets. All of them have different heights but each one, like the dome, is adorned with flowers. The building is striking in how skillfully it is decorated. Despite the age (the mosque is more than 400 centuries old), all the drawings are very clear, and the colors are still bright.

To see the shrine itself – the tomb of Bayazid Bostami – you need to enter the neighboring building. There is a large coffin surrounded by gray walls with small windows. Even if it is only an imitation of a grave, it is very beautifully decorated. It is upholstered in burgundy fabric with gold ornaments. Everything is covered in gold: curtains, patterns, dishes for gifts.

The complex impresses with contrasts and surprises with the richness and manifestations of religious traditions of locals.
