There are not many historical attractions in Barisal, as the city is quite young. Therefore, the construction of the Guthia Mosque, which was opened in October 2006, was a real event. The new complex is a vivid landmark of Barisal. It attracts not only tourists, but also locals, as it includes both ritual rooms: a mosque, minaret, madrasah, and a beautiful surrounding area where you can spend time: lakes, parks, alleys. The Guthia Mosque also houses a cemetery and an orphanage.
Construction of the complex began in 2003. It was conducted with private funds received from patrons and locals interested in the development of the city. At first, it was planned to invite European architects to implement the project. But, finally, the local specialists were chosen: the best engineers, architects, and builders worked for three years to create a magnificent architectural complex, which became a real jewel of Barisal.
When creating the complex, much attention was paid to its architectural design. It should have not only followed the age-old traditions of building mosques but also meet modern requirements and style. Therefore, the Guthia Mosque has traditional forms, but a unique decoration: in total, there are more than 20 domes with written quotes from sacred books in the Arabic language, as well as beautiful paintings made on the inner walls.
The Guthia Mosque complex was originally planned not only as a ritual place but also as a recreation area. There are beautiful arched passages, spacious parks and gardens, alleys, three large artificial lakes, and several streams connecting them.
In the evening, the Guthia Mosque transforms into a fairy-tale palace, thanks to the beautiful bright lighting. Reflected in the lakes and canals, the entire complex seems to float in the air.
No wonder that the Guthia Mosque complex has become a favorite place among citizens in a matter of days. Now it is also one of the main attractions of Barisal for tourists who definitely want to visit it as part of their trip to the city.
