According to Christianity, the abode of the first people was called Eden. It was a blossoming paradise, a garden of delight, where two trees grew and flourished the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil planted by God. The paradisiac tree of life unites all life forms and can be found in all religions—under different names but always in the same guise.

The ancient Jews believed that Eden was located where today’s Bahrain is. It was the cradle of human civilization. Besides, the legendary tree of life, whose fruits, according to legend, grant eternal life to the living and bring back the dead to life, grows in this land. Every day, it is more and more difficult for a modern person to believe in legends and ancient traditions. Still, we haven’t yet succeeded in explaining some of the miracles on the Earth. One of these wonders of the world is a mysterious natural event, one of the most prominent landmarks of the Kingdom of Bahrain, which the locals call the “tree of life.”

A few kilometers from Manama, not far from the highest peak of Bahrain, there is a unique tree, Prosopis cineraria, about 10 meters high and over 400 years old. A lonely tree in the middle of the quicksands of the horizonless Arabian desert, far from the sources of life, water, and other plants, blows all travelers away. Annually, more than 65,000 tourists from all over the world visit this mysterious place. Covered with lush greenery and a dense crown, the Bahrain tree of life grows its roots in the sand to a depth of more than 50 meters. How it survives in such a dry place, where there is almost no rain throughout the year, still remains a mystery.

Even the character of Steve Martin in the famous movie L.A. Story, filmed in 1991, calls the tree of life in Bahrain one of the most enigmatic phenomena in the world.
