Probably, every city has its symbol. It can be a very famous architectural masterpiece, for example, the Cathedral of our lady of Paris in Paris, or a fairly young monument, which has already become an important part of the city, its hallmark, and part of the coat of arms.
In Sumgait, this is a sculpture of the Peace Dove (Sülh göyərçini), created in 1978. It is located on the shores of the Caspian Sea in beautiful Nasimi Culture and Leisure Park named after Imadaddin Nasimi, a famous Azerbaijan poet.
The monument was designed by two famous people - the Chief Artist of the city Vagif Nazirov and the architect Asim Guliyev. The authors created their masterpiece from an unusual material -monolithic concrete. Perhaps it is this material that gives a special charm to the stylized image of a dove, which spread its wings as if preparing to take off.
The monument became a landmark for citizens immediately after the opening. Bride couples came here to take holiday photos. Parents brought their children to tell them about a bird that symbolizes peace and friendship. So gradually, the Peace Dove became the main meeting point not only for the residents of Sumgait but also for tourists.
In fact, this is not an accident. After all, not only this beautiful monument is attractive but also the park itself. This rather large park has excellent infrastructure for recreation, wonderful views of the Caspian Sea, and an abundance of local, sometimes unique, plants and flowers that fill the air with a delicate and pleasant aroma.
It is very nice to come here in the evening to enjoy the coolness and admire the setting sun becoming part of a large white dove. In this short moment, nature connects with the man-made art, and, as locals say, this is what a harmonious world without wars and destruction, filled with love and beauty should look like.
