On the right bank of the Kura River, opposite the unique settlement of Sudağılan, archaeologists have discovered interesting pot graves or, as they are also called, pitcher burials - a cemetery typical for the ancient Albanian peoples who lived on this territory many centuries ago.

The main difference between pitcher burials and ordinary graves, in which the bodies of the dead lie with their heads towards the exit from the cemetery, is that people are buried in huge pitchers. The bodies of the dead were given the shape of an embryo and placed in an earthen pot with their heads facing the neck.

Most likely, the ancient Albanians believed in the resurrection, so they prepared the dead for a new life, placing them in a vessel that served as a symbol of the mother's womb, showing the infinity of death and birth.

Another important symbol often found in this ancient cemetery is red. This shade has always represented blood, and in ancient times blood represented life. Thus, the ancient Albanians emphasized their belief in the resurrection. That death is not the end, but a temporary change. Another confirmation of this theory is that the best things of the deceased were left next to the jug-coffin: pots, jugs, jewelry, coins, tools. Everything that a person may need in their new life after the resurrection.

Most often, the jugs with the deceased were placed on the side so that they would be comfortable in their temporary "home". Later, as the cemetery became overcrowded, people were forced to change their traditions and place the jugs vertically.

As a rule, such graves did not have any ground signs. And the depth of the pit could be different: from 50 centimeters to four meters. Therefore, it is still difficult to determine whether all the burials have been found or whether archaeologists have yet to discover new secrets of the place.
