In the suburbs of Ganja, about five kilometers from the city, there is a very beautiful and important place-the Imamzadeh Mausoleum, built in the XIV century. Previously, this place was practically the center of the old city, and the mausoleum was one of its architectural gems.

Literally, the name of the Imamzadeh Mausoleum is translated as the Mausoleum of the Son of the Prophet. Sheikh Ibrahim, the famous ruler, who was revered both during his lifetime and after his death, rests in it. This is why this beautiful tomb became a Muslim shrine, a place of difficult pilgrimage for hundreds of believers.

The Imamzadeh Mausoleum is sometimes mistakenly called the crypt. In fact, it is an entire architectural complex, including a cemetery, a caravanserai, and a small mosque. Of course, all this was not built immediately. At first, there was only a crypt, later a beautiful mausoleum was built over it, and then the complex grew, becoming more and more important. By the middle of the XVII century, all the buildings that make up the complex were surrounded by a high brick wall to preserve the monument and protect it from the enemy.

And there was something to save. First, the ancient cemetery located on the territory of the mausoleum is the only one in the country with a large number of monuments with portraits of the buried. This is a rare phenomenon for the local culture, therefore, for several centuries in a row, this particular burial place has been worshiped so reverently. Secondly, the main gem of the complex is the dome of the mausoleum, which is decorated with bright blue tiles. Thirdly, the mosque. It is so tiny that it looks more like a dollhouse than a religious building.

Unfortunately, during the Soviet period, the complex suffered quite a lot from negligence, even though it was the only religious shrine of Azerbaijan listed in the register of state architectural monuments. Almost no funds were allocated for its maintenance and restoration. The first restoration took place only in 2010, and some restoration works are still underway, making the monument more and more beautiful.
