In 335 AD, the Armenian king Khosrov III founded the new city of Dvin. The Great Silk Road went through it, and in 481, due to its location, this city became the capital of Ancient Armenia, one of the wealthiest states of that time.

Dvin can be considered as one of the oldest settlements in the Armenian Highlands. Archaeological excavations have been conducted on the territory of the city for more than 50 years. Thanks to these excavations, stone religious buildings and workshops were discovered, and they can be attributed to the 5th century BC. In the 4th century BC, a small fortress appeared here, and behind its walls, there were altar steles and shrines.

But the adoption of Christianity and the development of trade were the impetus for the creation of a well-fortified city, the capital of an ancient state. Since the 4th century AD, several dynasties of Armenian kings lived here. The Holy See of the Armenian Church was also located here. And by the beginning of the 5th century, the city's population reached 100,000 people.

Unfortunately, in 863, the ancient capital of Armenia was destroyed by a powerful earthquake. 30 years later, residents partially restored the city, but an even stronger earthquake in 893 completely wiped out all the buildings, and more than 70 thousand citizens died under the ruins.

But even these events did not destroy the ancient capital. The city rose from the ashes like a Phoenix and continued its life. Of course, this life was no longer so successful and luxurious, but still. Gradually, the former greatness began to return to the Dvin, but in 1236 it was captured by the Mongol-Tatars. After their invasion, the city lasted for about a hundred years and then fell into decline. The remains of the architectural complex were preserved only since several families created small settlements on the ruins of former greatness that existed until the middle of the 18th century.

Today's Dvin is a famous archaeological center located near the city of Artashat. Every year thousands of people come here to see the picturesque landscapes, walk through the ruins of ancient streets and get to know the history of the country, its relations with Iran, Iraq, Assyria, and Byzantium.
