Deception island, this is the name of a beautiful place in Antarctica. It is a part of the South Shetland Islands, called the Antarctic Santorini.
There is located the active volcano Mech Neptune. But it is still one of the safest natural harbors in the world. Small and large ships regularly come to the port of Forster to show tourists the beauties of Antarctica or bring researchers exploring this unusual and mysterious land.
The history of the Deception Island is long. Since the end of the 19th century, whalers came here to fish. Later, on the island, were made expedition base for research. But people never stayed here for a long time. It is all about regular volcanic eruptions. It seems to be against the idea of people living here. That is why the whalers’ bases and researchers’ camps were often destroying. They were covered with lava and snow. The last eruption occurred in 1991-1992. It was not destroying as usual, and nobody died during this natural phenomenon.
Surprisingly, but the volcano makes the Deception Island attractive to tourists. After the eruption, you can find small lakes with thermal and mineral water. But be careful about swimming there! Water in the lakes does not mix and consists of several layers. So, one movement can lead to frostbite because of the ice water or a burn with boiling one.
Just a few animals inhabit Deception Island. The multiple volcanic springs heat the water in the harbor and around so much. So, it is impossible to reach the island at all. Only a few penguin colonies can do it. They love the outer coast of the Deception Island and made it home.
