The city of Sousse is beautiful both outside and underground. At the very top, ancient buildings are adjacent to modern buildings. Mosques, parks, and offices are heated by the scorching African sun. While underground it’s cool and there are more than 15 thousand ancient graves.

Passing through a stone arch, going down deeper and deeper, you find yourself in the mysterious catacombs of Sousse. This place is frightening because more than 15 thousand people are buried there. But it is also impressive and interesting. So you want to go farther and farther along these long tunnels, opening gallery after gallery.

One of the oldest necropolises is located under the city of Sousse in Tunisia. According to scientists, the catacombs were built in the 4-5th centuries. They were found relatively recently. The French army discovered tunnels under the city only in the 19th century. So, active research has begun since then. In this place, goosebumps are combined with an incredible curiosity. Fearfully turn around the corner, go to the gallery to see the graves. At the moment, four rooms have been discovered: two galleries of Good Pastor, Hermes, and Severus. However, you can only visit one of them.

The catacombs of the Good Pastor were the final resting place for more than 6,000 people. The tombs are dug in the walls on several levels. You don’t even notice them at first. Burials and passageways are lit by dim lanterns. And if you look closely, you can see drawings on the walls. These catacombs played the role of not only an underground cemetery but also a refuge from various persecutions. They also prayed and performed religious rituals there.

Now you can hardly see the drawings on the walls. The rest of the artifacts were sent to a local museum. There they can be studied in more detail. When you go here, arm yourself with a good navigator or an experienced guide. The second option is preferable. It’s less scary with a guide. Besides, the guide can tell you many interesting facts.
