You are lying quietly on the beach, sunbathing and enjoying a relaxing holiday... when suddenly your peripheral vision alert you that there is something huge, like a moving cobblestone. Your peace was disturbed by a giant tortoise!
Not far from Zanzibar, there is a small island that is officially called Changuu Island, but the locals nicknamed it "Prison Island" or "Turtle Island".
A nice wooden bridge a few meters above the turquoise water takes you to a small island of large turtles. The local "inhabitants" really look like living stones. Their carapace seems to be impenetrable and has a dark gray color, so you can easily mistake it for part of a rock. The turtles look very cute. When you look at them, you start to be touched, your lips blur into a smile, and your hand outstretches to pet 100-year-old beauties. However, their size is terrifying. At this moment, you realize how good it is that turtles are slow and don't attack people.
There are now several dozen turtles on the island. Although a hundred years ago there were about 100 of them. In 1919, the Governor of Seychelles sent four giant tortoises here. And already in 1955, their population increased to 200. The turtles turned out to be very loving. So they would have continued to multiply if they had not been prevented by the locals. They found out that turtle meat is not only edible, but also has a great taste, and began to catch animals for food and sale. So now, there are only 20 turtles left on the island.
If you dare, you can hand-feed such a beauty. The turtles chew the leaves willingly. After meeting with the turtles, you can go back to the beach, stretch out on the warm sand and take a sunbath - Prison Island is famous for its beaches. Or you can enjoy the incredible underwater world. The island is of coral origin, so there are real natural wonders under the water: colorful corals, starfish, and beautiful fish.
