Temples, Churches

The Immaculate Conception Cathedral is not only the first and largest church in the capital of Seychelles but also the main temple of the local Catholic diocese.

There used to be a small chapel, which was built by visiting Europeans in 1851 to attract islanders to their faith. But it turned out that a miniature building was not enough. Therefore, in 1874, when Seychelles was under British rule, the chapel was replaced by a large cathedral - the Immaculate Conception Cathedral.

The cathedral turned out to be magnificent. At that time, there were no tall buildings in the city. And in general, the buildings had nothing in common with the interesting architecture. Therefore, the appearance of the temple, made in the French colonial style that was incredibly popular at that time, became a real event. It is said that many locals converted to the new faith only to visit this beautiful building more often. But at the same time, they continued to cherish their traditions at home.

Massive columns, arches, beautiful stained-glass windows - all this has survived to this day, even though the cathedral was regularly reconstructed, and updated. The cathedral was restored for the first time in 1993, then the interior was completely redesigned - new benches were added, the altar was slightly changed, the vaults were strengthened, the stained-glass windows were restored since some of them were cracked. In 1995, the famous local sculptor Egbert Marday created amazing carved doors, which perfectly adorned the external appearance of the cathedral.

In 2001, the first and only bishop of Seychelles, Felix Paul, was buried on the territory of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. His grave is not easy to notice, as it is made flush with the floor. The fact that an important person for the city is buried here is evidenced only by a small memorial plaque standing next to the tombstone.

Now the Immaculate Conception Cathedral is an active сhurch. Hundreds of people come to the service every Sunday. The cathedral is also open to tourists.
