The Museum of Amazigh Culture is one of the most interesting places in Agadir. This small cultural center has an extensive exposition about the life of Berbers. There are their national clothes, jewelry, models of houses, more than 200 ancient artifacts dating from the 18-19 centuries, and the total number of exhibits presented in the museum is much more than 1000.

This Museum was opened recently, in 2000, 40 years after the terrible earthquake that occurred in Agadir. The city was reborn literally from the ashes. And the construction of the Museum has become a kind of sign that life is getting better, that the worst is behind us, and that the development and preservation of memory and culture are ahead.

The Museum of Amazigh Culture is small. It has only three halls. But the collection created by its employees is amazing. Here you can find beautiful jewelry, as well as information about the process, how they are created, and what tools are used. There are also bright national carpets. A separate space is reserved for a photo exhibition: you can see photos of Berbers in their daily life.

The most striking hall is the hall where mascots are presented – an important part of the Berber culture. These peoples have never used jewelry for nothing because they are beautiful. Each pendant, necklace, or another accessory they put a magical meaning. To learn more about these features of culture, you should ask for the help of a guide, who will be happy to tell you about the meanings of jewelry, how the decorative elements of the Northern and Southern inhabitants of Morocco differed, and what meaning the symbols have not only on the jewelry but also on carpets. More simply, the Berbers used jewelry as a language that helped them communicate with each other and with higher powers.

The Museum also has a small space for temporary exhibitions. Usually, photos or paintings by local authors are presented here.
