A beach resort and port city of Port Said was founded in the middle of the 19th century and since then together with another port city, Alexandria, they have been considered to be The Sea Gates of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Due to its strategic location, this city has always been a matter of debate and disagreement. The brave resistance against the military forces of Graet Britain and France during the Suez Crisis in 1956 gained its glory of a hero city and its feats are often compared to the events that had happened in Stalingrad. Nowadays, at the time of peace for Egypt, all its residences and guests can enjoy a breathtaking embankment of the Suez Canal in Port Said. They can also get acquainted with the events of those days, the fighting, the superiority of the French and British armies, the Egyptian heavy losses by visiting the Military Museum.
In 1964, when almost 10 years had passed after the day of the Egyptian victory, the Museum was opened for a wide audience. The single-storey building with an area of 7,5 thousand square meters is located close to Shohada square and consists of three rooms with a permanent exhibition. Each of the rooms is dedicated to a specific theme.
The first exhibition is called “All time”, it features the military weapons of the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt. The second one represents the events of the Triple Aggression on the territory of Port Said. The central place in that room belongs to a local newspaper “Al-Ahram”, the very paper where the president of Egypt informed his people about the return of rights and funds. You can also see a diorama showing the city residences fighting in the days of resistance, some of the trophies: items of clothes and munitions taken from the British soldiers. Showpieces of the third room will tell the visitors the story of two wars between Egypt and Israel. Israeli heavy weaponry and munitions, cannons, tanks, and parts of military planes are displayed in the spacious yard of the museum. All the Egyptian wars starting from the pharaohs’ time and finishing with the Arab-Israeli conflict of 1973 are represented in these three rooms of the museum. They help the visitors realize and feel all the aches and pains suffered by the Egyptians who were bravely defending the borders of their motherland.
