Kilometers of snow-white sandy beaches, small groves of date palms, azure waves of the vast Atlantic Ocean … What else do tourists want to see when they go to the islands of Cabo Verde? They can do active leisure activities that are popular on the African continent, like motocross and jeep safari in the desert dunes or diving and surfing in the warm waters of the Atlantic. Someone is attracted by legends about sleeping volcanoes, while someone goes to the ends of the earth looking for lost treasures. No matter what brings travelers to these lands, or more precisely, to Boa Vista, they will be impressed by its sight, the Shipwreck Museum. It is rather unusual to see a museum on the beach islands, but it will be a surprise for all guests of the island to see treasures.
The Shipwreck Museum in Sal Rei was not even one year old when its fame has already reached other continents. It can be explained not only by its expositions. Firstly, this is the first and the only private anthropological and art museum in Cabo Verde. Secondly, it was built from recycled materials that were brought to the coast by the ocean. And thirdly, this is not an ordinary museum. It tries to save a person, his inner world through the understanding of himself as a small ship, shipwrecked in the sea of life. That is why it is named this way. Everyone will get its treasure and keep it for life.
All exhibits of the museum are divided into three permanent expositions representing the past. It is the history and Creole culture of the Cabo Verde Islands, an exhibition of works of art, and a collection of underwater archaeological finds. The future is presented in a separate room. It forces to discuss and debate to better understand the past and build the future. On the upper floors of the museum, you can see halls for temporary exhibitions of local artists.
