It seems that there is no place on earth that experienced archaeologists have never explored. All the tombs were found, the sarcophagi were examined, and the hillforts were excavated. But in the surroundings of the capital of the African state of Algeria on the coast of the Mediterranean sea, you can explore one of the main sights of these places. It is an ancient mysterious burial, which has always been the subject of the argument for all archaeologists and historians.

The Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania is one of the most controversial and mysterious secret tombs. According to local legend, under the giant stone dome rests the soul of the daughter of the most famous couple in ancient history, the last Queen of Egypt Cleopatra and the ancient Roman commander Mark Anthony. The beautiful Queen of Mauretania, Cleopatra Selena, and her brave husband, Numidian king Juba II, were buried here. They were ruling the kingdom for more than 20 years.

The construction of the crypt was completed during the reign of Cleopatra and Juba II in 3 year BC. The first written mention of that are made in the 1st century BC by the Ancient Roman historian and geographer Pomponius Mela. The round stone structure has a diameter of 60 meters and is towering over 40 meters from the square basement. The small pyramid crowns this complex structure, mixing Egyptian and Roman styles and showing the influence of the Queen of Mauretania on the project. Around the perimeter of the mausoleum building there are 60 ancient Greek columns of the ionic order, and in the direction of each side of the world there are 4 high false doors.

The interior of the tomb deserves the most attention. The entrance is located close to one of the false doors. A spiral labyrinth of more than 150 meters leads inside and ends with sliding doors. Two stone lions guard the entrance to the burial rooms. Unfortunately, it remains unknown what was inside the tombs, because they had been ransacked long before the first archaeologists found it.
