The Yurubí National Park (Parque Nacional Yurubí) is an ideal place for walking, observing flora and fauna, and communicating with nature. The park with an area of 236 sq. km. is situated in the north of Venezuela, in Yaracuy State. Founded in 1969, it has become the fifth national park in the country. The goal of its establishment was the protection of the Yurubí River, which was a source of fresh water for the city of San Felipe as well as for the agricultural valleys nearby. The Yurubí National Park is located in the mountains of the Sierra de Aroa and includes cloudy, low-mountain greenwoods, surrounded by cultivated areas. The climate in the park is warm and humid, with average annual temperatures from 20 to 26 °C.
The park has small paths, mostly used by a few visitors and researchers. The park isn’t inhabited: local people of the area were resettled a long time ago.
Yurubí is one of the best-preserved parks in Venezuela, little explored even by those who live nearby. In spite of it, it is considered to be vulnerable enough – there are threats of fire, illegal hunt and unauthorized use of lands. Nevertheless, monitoring of the park allows providing the security and preservation of biodiversity for the future.
The landscape, flora, fauna, and natural resources are most interesting in the park. You can see rivers with small dams. The park was expected to have a high level of biodiversity and endemism because of its geographical position. But the researches showed that flora and fauna are not examined here well. There are palms, ferns, epiphytes, laurel and myrtle plants. It counts 68 species of birds, 64 species of bats, several species of carnivores, rodents, marsupials, primates. A big variety of amphibians, reptiles, iguanas also live here. Among mammals, there is the brocket deer.
Near the bridge, at the entrance to the Leonor de Bernabó Recreation Park, there is a municipal sports school with three swimming pools (two for children and one for adults).
