Machu Picchu translates as «Old Mountain» and is one of the most incredible destinations on our planet. Annually, millions of tourists come here to see the ancient citadel of the Incas built at an unbelievable height. This archaeological site is listed among the New Seven Wonders of the World.
In the 16th century, the entire area of Peru was occupied by Spanish conquistadors. They destroyed almost all that could remind of the ancient civilization. But Machu Picchu, thanks to its location, managed to survive. Although many centuries passed after the last locals left the city in 1532, its walls and buildings still have an almost pristine look.
The Princess Palace, the observatory, religious structures, and residential areas are all built according to a unique technique. Each stone is cut in such a way that it fits perfectly with the other stones in the masonry. You can’t even place a hair between two such «bricks».
Scientists suggest that Machu Picchu was built about 1440. It is still a mystery for what reason and how there appeared houses and ritual structures. It was probably the residency of the Emperor or a location for criminals to keep them away from civilization. There is an opinion that it was sort of a monastery. Some researchers say that Machu Picchu is a huge science city where astronomy was studied. This place is still wrapped in mysteries and riddles.
The main question is how the Incas succeeded in building such an immense city on a mountain ridge with a height of more than 2 400 meters above sea level. How did they bring stones for their houses there? The Incas didn’t have wheels – all their roads had step structure, and, most probably, they carried all heavy things in their hands. How did they supply the city with water and create a unique drain system? And why, having almost a fortress-city, they didn’t deflect the European conquerors but simply left their lands and disappear from the historical map of the world?
But not only the ancient riddles constitute the beauty of the place. Stunning views that open from the mountain top – that is what inspires everyone who comes here, even if it is not the first time.
