Tourists most often come to Arequipa to visit one of the most unique places on the planet – the Colca Canyon (Valle del Colca), where you can not only admire the beauty of nature but also see the fascinating flights of the largest birds in the world, condors.
The Colca Canyon is famous not only in Peru but also abroad since it is the second-largest canyon in the world, which is almost twice the depth of the famous Grand Canyon in the United States. By the way, the largest canyon – Cotahuasi – is also located in Peru. However, since it is much more difficult to get there, it is less popular than the Colca Canyon, where thousands of tourists come every year.
The condor is not just a large, but a huge bird: the wingspan of some individuals can be almost 3.5 meters. Their flight is a truly mesmerizing sight. For several tens of minutes, these feathered giants can soar in the air without flapping their wings, only by catching air currents. There are several viewing platforms in the canyon to make it easier for tourists to observe this natural beauty. The most extensive panorama opens from the most convenient of platforms – the Condor Cross.
In addition to the majestic birds, guests are attracted to the canyon by the Colca River, which is very popular among rafters who love speed and difficult descents. You can also explore the most famous volcanoes of the Peruvian Andes by walking around the area. And, of course, buy souvenirs to remember visiting such an interesting place.
Locals often call this canyon the Valley of the Eagles, the Lost Valley of the Incas, and even the Wonderland. And it's all true. After all, there were once ancient tribes, nests of huge beautiful birds, and all this was surrounded by magnificent nature. Isn't this a miracle?
