Port Stanley is a rather small town. Its main attraction is the nature that amazes the guests with its diversity. In addition, there are some places worth visiting in the city itself.
Probably, one of the most magnetic and remarkable buildings in Port Stanley is Christ Church Cathedral, the most southern Anglican cathedral in the world. The monumental red and grey construction with a tall tower rises high over the other low houses around in a solemn way.
Christ Church Cathedral was built in 1892 on the spot of the church of the Holy Trinity that used to be there before. It had been destroyed in 1886 by the peat landslide as well as a part of the city Stanley. Natural stone, beautiful and present in abundance on the city territory, was chosen for building the cathedral.
The design of the building is simple but at the same time majestic. There are no refined decorations, on the contrary, it’s ascetic inside and outside, and it adds grandeur and significance to Christ Church Cathedral. However, the architects paid special attention to the window decoration. The leaded panes made by European craftsmen to order create beautiful tricks of light letting bright shades and colors flood over the small interior space of the cathedral.
The tower of the cathedral has five bells that toll for a beginning of a mass on usual days and perform marvelous chimes on holidays.
One of the main highlights in Christ Church Cathedral is two functioning pipe organs, big and small, for holiday and daily masses accordingly. They were both made in Ireland specially for Christ Church Cathedral.
Besides religious ceremonies, today the church hosts also organ concerts and excursions. The cathedral has been a museum for a few decades now, it is dedicated to the soldiers who died during international wars.
The locals are fond and proud of Christ Church Cathedral, its image decorates the backside of the local banknote, Falkland pound.
