Ecuador has many beautiful locations that still keep the history of ancient times. Picturesque ruins can be found in every corner of the country. One of the most famous and remarkable archaeological sites is Sicalpa, a small commune close to Riobamba, where not only parts of houses and public buildings are preserved but also grandiose ancient temples. Some of them are restored, and now services and lectures on history are held there.
This marvelous place was discovered relatively recently, in the 80s of the last century. And it was hard to imagine then that Sicalpa was one of the centers of colonial Ecuador.
When the Spanish arrived in the country, they planned to build the capital of the new state exactly in this area. But having spent here a few months, they understood that the mountain terrain and climate are not the best choices for the capital city, and so the colonial government moved closer to modern Quito. But many Spanish farmers stayed here and built Old Riobamba, which became a prospering cultural and religious center with time. Today it is called Sicalpa.
The conducted research helped identify the approximate look of the town. It consisted of five districts, each with its big and sightly temple. The whole area of the settlement was supplied with water thanks to a widespread network of aqueducts. The town had its ceramics production, spacious warehouses for goods, and a vast market square.
But in 1797, Old Riobamba witnessed a devastating earthquake: big and small buildings were ruined, including the main church; many people died. Besides, because of the natural disaster, the landscape of the area changed, and this made the citizens leave their houses and move to other settlements.
Today, Sicalpa is an attractive tourist site. People come here to see the restored temples, walk in the ancient streets with picturesque ruins, and visit the historical museum.
