A real gateway to another world, the opportunity to find yourself in another reality just in a few minutes – it is all is located near the town of Bello in Colombia. Fancy that! You are driving on the highway, the sun is shining and it is about 11 am. A few minutes later thick fog surrounds your car. It completely hides the sun. Besides, it seems that rainfall is about to begin. It makes you feel that several hours have passed in a few minutes and the evening has come. But actually, you have just come to the wasteland of Las Baldías. Here is a completely different world with an otherworldly, strange, mysterious nature. This place is even more mysterious because of the fog through which outlandish silhouettes of plants are scarcely visible. This wasteland occupies 890 hectares of land near the town of Bello and it is one of the smallest in the country.
You have the feeling that you’ve reached another planet. Only the rustle of grass, the singing of birds, the buzzing of bees, and the murmur of numerous streams return you to reality. The streams that flow down, closer to the cities, are born in the local mountains. For residents, this is perhaps the only source of freshwater. And some of them believe that the wasteland water is magical and helps to overcome the illnesses.
The ecosystem of the Las Baldías Wasteland is very fragile. Apart from 61 species of unique plants, there are almost two hundred species of birds, nine species of amphibians, and 130 species of insects that inhabit this land. Las Baldías is a paradise for scientists. Stepping cautiously on the sinking earth, the researchers explore this mysterious place. Although Las Baldías is open to tourists, you should be very careful since any impact on the wasteland environment can be harmful. However, if you are careful and follow the guide, you can avoid negative influences and get fantastic emotions from visiting this place.
