Maceió is famous for its beaches. However, this city is worth visiting not only for a lazy holiday. There you can also spend time usefully. For example, you can visit the Floriano Peixoto Palace Museum. This building is also known as Palácio dos Martírios. It is the seat of the government of Alagoas from 1902 to 2006. A museum was officially opened there after that.

Now the museum’s collection consists mainly of furniture from the 19th and 20th centuries, silver, crystal, decorative objects, as well as paintings by such prominent state artists as the outstanding Luis Silva, Miguel Torres, and Laurenzo Peixotu. It demonstrates the development and evolution of Brazilian furniture from colonization to the modern period. The exposition does not occupy the whole building: there are seven rooms on the top floor, plus corridors that connect the rooms to the stairs. The building also has five rooms on the top floor and two rooms on the ground floor.

Unfortunately, the museum did not receive much funding when it was created. Also, the management did not timely start monitoring the exhibits. Therefore, many exhibits were damaged. Besides, for some reason, not enough guards were initially hired. Therefore, some of the valuable treasures disappeared. But now, the museum has finally started cataloging the exhibits.

The building itself is preserved in good condition. It was built by the Italian artist Luis Lucarini. Architects note its unusual eclectic architecture. So the building can also be considered a kind of exhibit.

Please note that organized tours of the museum start at 8 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays and Sundays, the museum is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
