In the oldest part of Rosario, next to Plaza de 25 de Mayo and the famous Palace of Lions, you can find a magnificent sacred building, Basilica Catedral de Nuestra Senora del Rosario.
It is a busy place. The temple overlooks the famous pedestrian street Pasaje Juramento. It leads to State Flag Memorial (Monumento Nacional a la Bandera) and connects the most famous sights of the city.
The cathedral built in the Italian Renaissance style was erected at the end of the 20th century on the site of another church.
The cathedral has two high towers with carved crosses. Each tower has bells. The triangular tympanum of the church is decorated with a bas-relief with angels. It is located above the main entrance and supported by four columns. These, in turn, are installed on the marble basement of a contrasting color. On the sides of the portal, on the wall, you can see lanterns.
The main altar of the cathedral was installed in 1898. It is made of the famous Italian Carrara marble. If you climb the stairs, you get to the chapel of the Virgin, the very heart of the cathedral. Only 150 parishioners can be accommodated here.
The main treasure of the cathedral is the Image of Our Lady of the Rosary. It was brought from the Spanish city of Cadiz in 1773. This shrine was transported from the first church. Now, it decorates Basilica Catedral de Nuestra Senora del Rosario.
Over time, the church was not just attracting more and more parishioners and travelers, who wanted to enjoy its beauty, but also raising its status. In 1934, the diocese of Rosario was established, and the church got the status of a cathedral. Since 1966, it became a basilica.
Three archbishops are buried in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary. These are Silvino Martínez, Guillermo Bolatti, Jorge Manuel López.
