Museo Regional Patagonico Antonio Garces is the oldest museum in Argentina. It is located in the city of Comodoro Rivadavia. The doors of the museum were opened to visitors in 1948.

The museum has several amazing varied collections: archaeological, paleontological, zoological, and artistic ones. Besides, there is a hall with exhibits that are related to the history of the Indians, the indigenous peoples of Patagonia. Professor Antonio Garces, whose name the museum bears, was a true enthusiast of his work and a patriot of the country. This man was a simple village teacher. Throughout all his life, he was collecting various objects and artifacts that left a mark in history.

After his retirement, Antonio Garces made a generous gift to the city of Comodoro Rivadavia. He donated his collection, which, by that time, had about 7000 exhibits. By order of General Raggio, who was in charge of Comodoro Rivadavia, people erected the building to contain the collection. It was a mini-replica of the museum in La Plata. The exposition of the museum was rapidly growing and increased to 25,000 items.

Museo Regional Patagonico Antonio Garces has a large number of geological finds and animal fossils. In general, the exposition of the museum tells the history of Comodoro Rivadavia and the territory of Patagonia.

Fans of ancient history will definitely not be bored here. In the museum, you can see the prints of large ancient ferns left on the stones or the bones of animals living in ancient times on this territory. Besides, the museum has display cases with fossils dating back to the Tertiary period.

Moreover, the museum exhibits tools and weapons of the first inhabitants of Patagonia, who came to this area 11,000 years ago. There, you can also see a replica of an Indian tomb and patterns of original ceramics.
