Before immigrants from Europe inhabited American lands, Indians lived here. For thousands of years, the Hohokam tribes inhabited these lands. They made a unique irrigation system to stay in these arid places.
In 1540, the army of Francis Vazquez de Coronado attacked the tribes of the Indians. Francis was looking for seven cities in Sibyl – gold places, protected by the Indians, according to the assurances of his informant. The army did not find any gold deposits and left this place. But the mystery of the golden cities intrigued people…
Some time later, people visited the area of Hohokam. They persuaded the Indians to show them gold places and succeeded in mining the precious metal. They were transporting it to Spain. After 200 years, the Spaniards had to leave the gold mine. According to legend, they scared the Indians, and the latter promised never to show gold deposits to anyone else.
The Indians were following this rule and have never revealed this secret. According to legend, gold is located in one of the caves of the Superstition Mountains. One of its grottoes is sacred and has a portal to the other world.
However, each rule can be broken. In 1846, the German Jacob Wels, moving to America, was captured by the idea to find the gold of the Indians. He found a partner, and two men went to the mountains of Superstition. Luck changed to gold diggers, and they were already filling the bags with precious metal, while the Indians came to them. Wels was trying to escape with his bag of gold, but his friend died in the battle with the Indians. Coming back, Wels promised to never return to Arizona and tell anybody where he found treasures.
Men are weak in love. Julia Thomas, seducing Wels, pulled out information about the location of gold and came here with a group of gold diggers. But only Julia returned, doctors said she was insane. She told that she met ghosts in the mountains, dead gold miners, killing everyone who was with her. They left her alive as a warning that everyone coming here again would be killed.
